The basic components of your fuse box
It is very important to know where your fuse box is located in your home or business should you ever need to shut off your electricity in case of an emergency.
It’s just as important to know the basic components of your fuse box.
1. The Mains Switch
This is the red switch on the fuse board in the attached picture. The mains switch allows you to shut off the supply of electricity into your home. Some properties may have more than one switch.
2. Circuit Breakers
These are the black switches in the picture and are built into the fuse box. They will switch off a circuit if they detect a fault. When a circuit breaker trips they can be reset quiet easily, however, whatever caused the fault in the first place should be identified.
3. RCD (Residual Current Device)
An RCD is a safety device designed to protect people from getting fatal electric shocks from contact with live electricity. RCD’s also offer some level of protection from electrical fires caused by earth faults.

4. Fuses
Fuses can also be found instead of circuit breakers. Fuses have specialised electrical wiring running between two screws. When an overload current or fault runs through the fuse wire, it will overheat and melt. When the fuse melts, it breaks the associated circuit.
If you have any problems or issues with your fuse box, it is not advised under any circumstances to wait before taking action. You should contact a RECI registered electrician right away or Homepro.ie.
Booking an Electrician through homepro.ie takes less than 60 seconds. All of our Electricians are registered with RECI, have insurance in place and are qualified professionals.
